REVIEW: SIMILAR OBJECTS - SHIFT FREQUENCY

17 JULY 2012

The space heads over at local Singapore label Darker Than Wax prove an unrelenting knack for off-kilter, future beats, this time with the Shift Frequency EP. Hailing from the Philippines, Similar Objects' (aka Jorge Juan Wieneke V) craft is astronomically influenced by metaphysics, the science behind vibrations and frequencies, which make up the fundamental aspects of...well, being.

This unabashed cosmic journey to self-awareness is embraced in his music, which swirls down the abyss of oddness and ambient lucidity, heavily resonating in his earlier works –often an amalgamation of shoegaze and sporadic IDM, from 'Black Aircon Sober' to 'Ambgqty', which received the stamp of approval from local underground magazine, 'Pulp', and was ranked Top 5 Albums of 2011.

Still retaining the dreamy lull, Shift Frequency enraptures with a more uplifting, melodious vibe – with significant atmospherics much comparable to Teebs – though firmly holding to his own catalyst of emotions. 'Ab$tractImpre$$ion$' opens on an easy, flighty slate, allowing 'Angala' to take over the reins for what is to come, with an enchanting disarray of fragmented beats and twee, whimsical synths.

'Earth School' slows things down with a stoner stagger and Neanderthal bleeps, before launching the futuristic hypno-track 'Mu', laced with deliciously funk-textured synths.

'Pastmayanfutureprincess' innocently mounts to a labyrinth of manic beats and obscure rattle, cascading to the wickedly tasteful end of 'Secret Sciences' – refreshingly structured, with an assertive groove and rhythm.

Indulgence is not always a bad thing, especially when squared off by practicality and emotions pulsating throughout the EP. Compositions evoke a visceral, post-rock sentiment that is uncommonly beautiful. The fascinating intricacies of Shift Frequency grow on you with its melancholic, instrumental soundscapes – spawning a sombre flight of fancy.
