ARTIST INTERVIEW: WILLIAM J

30 OCTOBER 2013

William J's forward thinking selection, quick mixing, versatility, and strong knowledge of dance music history has been bubbling up in the Singapore underground. Catch him representing his Darker Than Wax label stable this Saturday before KiNK.

Hometown:
I moved around too much to have one. Singapore is home for now. I still have love for Vancouver though.

Horoscope:
Not a believer of horoscopes.

Favourite cuisine:
Chey Sua Carrot Cake, Blk 127 Lorong 1 Toa Payoh

Your sound has been described as fresh, evolving, genre defying, never the same. Do you agree?
I want to be open to as many sounds as I can.

How do your approach DJing?
Like cooking.

And producing?
Like studying.

Hardest thing about doing what you do? And the best?
Getting burnt out on music you love can be hard at times, although usually doesn't last long. Best part is going to Swee Choon after a gig.

How do you find the Singapore scene as opposed to other places you've been?
Better than a lot of places and very good right now. I think people shouldn't complain as much, I feel lucky to be here. Definitely needs some new smaller venues though.

A place you would recommend visitors to Singapore to go?
Jurong Hill

Tell us about your involvement with the Darker Than Wax stable.
I help with different aspects of running a label. We also share a lot of music and ideas.

Hardware or software?
I'd use hardware if I had it. For DJing I prefer not to use a laptop.

Latest song purchase?
0H91 - Stealth

A song you will play at dusk?
Fatima - Technology

And at dawn?
Vybz Kartel - Clarks

Who or what are some of your important influences?
Brackles, Neil Young, El-B, James from the Abbot and Keefer Flower Shop.

Advice to DJs/Producers just starting out?
Stay hungry and rarely leave your room.

What can we expect from you on 2 Nov with KiNK?
Big house and garage riddims. Maybe some grimey bits.

What's next in the pipeline for you?
Zoukout + making beats, new Darker Than Wax nights.
