There are few things that can beat knowledge and experience; and you can count on this veteran duo to deliver a sound education on the dancefloor. djB and Brendon P do a special reprise of their Houseysouldoingz outfit from back in the day at Future Bound on 25 Feb 2012 at their common playground, Zouk.

Zouk resident djB holds down the house fort, having fed waves after waves of club punters with his brand of big room, tribally, techy and afro-rithmmms. Spotted by luminaries such as DJ Gregory and Martin Solveig, expect a different side of 'Zouk's favourite resident DJ' (Zouk 19th Anniversary poll, 2010) come this Saturday.

Describe your sound and how it has evolved over the span of your DJ career.
Honestly, nothing much has changed. I keep an open mind to music and as a resident DJ, our job is to entertain (80%) but at the same thing, try introducing newer music to the punters. That will never change.

This year, you're starting your own label, F1rstrecords/O4M, with Spanish DJ/Producer Danny Marquez. How is that going?
Well, we released Bust the Beats, our first release on 04M and received massive support from Dada life, Bob Sinclar etc. Dada life has signed it to a compilation they are doing for Tiesto's Musical Freedom label. We have more stuff lining up this year for F1rst. I also just finished a huge vocal tracks with Danny Marquez, which will be out for WMC.

Describe one of your most memorable gigs so far.
I think all the gigs are special in their own ways. Some are good for their vibe while others are learning experiences you earned. So it is hard to pin down the most memorable gigs. But in Asia, I love to play Japan and Seoul. They have the best crowd.

What are you excited to see in the local and/or international music scene this year?
While the entire world embarks into the more easy poppy electro house, it will be interesting to see how the underground scene will try to win the race (LOL).

If there's one thing you want to be remembered for in the music industry, what would that be?
Everybody is a BITCH!, everybody is constantly bitching about each other or how crap the scene is, how commercial this/that DJ is, how bad the crowd is blah blah blah...come on guys...less hate more love.

I draw inspiration from everybody, from the punters to the DJs. It is hard to name someone in particular because you might be inspired by him this time around but not anymore in the future....so.

I will be playing a different set as compared to the accessible banging stuff I play over in Zouk main room.

Industry veteran and former Zouk resident of 8 years, Brendon P sets span generations, continents, trend and time having been schooled by the sounds of Paradise Garage, Funhouse, Dancetaria and Area. Describe a typical day in your life.
Well, the day usually starts off with the usual – breakfast first (unless I've been DJing the night before). Oh, and lots of coffee. Then a quick check on my e-mails and soundcloud mail, and of course, the usual check up on Facebook to see if anyone's gotten in touch. Then it's usually working on new tracks or edits (and more coffee) before I rush off to my student schedule and, eventually, dinner and some quality time with the family if the clock permits. Once all that's done, it'll be checking the net for new music or artists/DJs that I'd like to keep track on.  Did I just skip through lunch? Ouch!

Tell us about your musical journey and how it has evolved till today.
Wow, that's a long one, and to cut it short, since the age of 4, and in (almost chronological order) contemporary jazz, big band jazz, rock n roll, country, psychedelic rock, heavy metal, funk, soul, disco, rhythm and blues, jazz funk, blues, late 70's and early 80's electronica and electro-pop, punk and indie, house, acid house, techno, hip-hop, new-jack-swing, mad-chester brit-pop, grunge, trip-hop, acid-jazz, latin-american, afro-beat, reggae, jungle, nu jazz, deep-house, tech-house, nu disco...it's kinda went like that I suppose. I keep finding new things to get excited about everyday, except for most current top 40 pop music and that dirty dutch thing though, most of that shit is awful. However, I did like the Adele album though, and Mayer Hawthorne (if you could call him a 'pop' artist', he's much much more... actually), he's sizzling!)

Do you have any tips on where to start hunting for good music, or any useful links?
Think it was easier when we had good record shops around, it was easier to check the import section or 12 inch section and find loads of new interesting music and meet loads of interesting new people, not necessarily all DJs. Magazines were also a big part for me in discovering new music as well. I suppose, one could start with Resident Advisor. As an entry level online magazine, it's informative and hyperlinks you to lots of other interesting sites to gather more information on the artists, DJs and their music. There's a book called 'Last Night A DJ Saved My Life' by Frank Broughton and Bill Brewster which, apart from being a comprehensive history lesson, lists a lot of the big records that were played back in the day at clubs like the Funhouse, Paradise Garage, Dancetaria, Warehouse, Wigan Casino etc. That might be a good list to take you back and see how diverse the music programming was back then. Then try good online stores and hunt those tunes down, places like Juno, Piccadilly, Phonica, Traxsource and What People Play always stock good music and represses of the older stuff too, in both vinyl and digital formats. Also, Soundcloud for heaps of good edits, new tracks and reworks. Also, if you find a record store while you're on holiday, step in and dig deep.

Having been a resident DJ at Zouk for 8 years, could you share some of your most memorable moments in the local music scene?
Well Zouk going global was one great moment, even before I became a resident. There were people around the world who couldn't place Singapore on a world map, but knew that Zouk was a club in Singapore. And even before all that happened, when it was all mostly all local, before the whole 'foreign explosion', There was/is lots to be proud of locally; Zircon Lounge, The Oddfellows, The Heritage, The Observatory, Chuando & Frey shooting the cover and promotional pictures for Janet Jackson's album "Discipline". Such a depth of local talent this country has that's sadly being ignored locally, but gaining a small but loyal global following. Syndicate's invitation to showcase their talent at the Worldwide Fest in Sete last year was another recent 'local' moment. And it's nice to see Xhin doing really well globally too. As, for myself, most recently, getting booked to DJ in Cielo in New York in 2010 and in Preston and London in the UK last year, and being asked by Matthew Kyle from New York to remix his track 'Momentum', remind me that hard work and integrity can still pay off, even if no one here really notices. There's just too many good local moments to list, but it's always a proud moment for me when one of my industry peers gets a decent break, no matter how big or small.

Are there any individuals or collectives in the local music scene that got your attention recently?
I've never been one to be taken by collectives per se, save the few that are doing positive and important work. But there are a few very young and talented DJ's, especially Joshua Goh, whose ability, knowledge and taste surpass heaps of other young budding DJs of his age. Also other young budding DJs like Zhan Hui, Janvin and Rachel Tan who've got my attention recently. Basically because of their attention to quality and detail in their respective genres, and the way they stick up for it and have fun doing it too. I think if they all work hard and wisely enough, they can shape the future in a very positive sense.

If there's one thing you want to be remembered for in the music industry, what would that be?
Apart from being a stickler for quality and good taste, someone who's always upheld and enjoyed the fun, integrity and simplicity of the industry.

What trends in dance music do you think are emerging this year, and what are your thoughts?
I see it going back to basics, but not in a minimal sense though. It's going back to grooves that used to get dancefloors dancing. Not jumping, like a heard of bloody crazed baboons... dancing (which means some of y'all should start taking proper dance lessons, yo!). People are going to start digging up those classic analogue sounds, basslines and keys and using them again. Not just the presets, real keys. It's already happening.

What are some projects you are currently involved in?
Well, there's tracks for the Midnight Shift album, and also a full EP project for Matthew Kyle's New York based Independent label In The Woods, another two EP releases in the works and, there's a small tour of the US West Coast sometime in late May/early June. And then, there's my own artist album, which I've delayed in finishing for way too long.

What can we expect from you at the upcoming Midnight Shift event?
Expect a set of butt-shaking music, nothing too deep, just tasteful, fun, proper, funky, forward thinking house, techno and then some.
