Formerly from The Liquid Room, Butter Factory and now at Zouk, Adrian Wee aka weelikeme is founder of the island's longest running indie nights - Poptart - but has his beginnings too firmly rooted in techno. Read on to find out more about him and listen to his promo mix before his performance at the Midnight Shift Label Showcase on 13 April 2013 featuring Deetron.

You've come a long way...how did you get started?
To cut a long story short - I got into electronic music when 90s bands like Pulp and Beck put in a lot of electronic emphasis in their music, and many bands were remixed by the likes of Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim. The interest let me to discover bigbeat, house, techno, trance, dnb. So when I got myself turntables and a mixer, I locked myself up in my figuring out how to beatmix. Six months later I got my first gig, and that was the start of my DJing career.

How was the scene back then from what you came from and how has it changed?
There were many small places at the Md Sultan belt that were open to promoters throwing parties without much hassle. This pre-social media era saw flyering and actually speaking to people as very integral elements of promoting a party.

Has being based in Singapore shaped our style in any way?
Definitely. We need to understand the local crowd in order to have a good night. I can't simply cut/paste things i pick up from overseas parties and DJs, you need to mould and adapt your party to the local audiences.

How did you record this mix and how would you describe it to us?
This mix was done in my studio. By 'studio' i mean my laptop. It's a reflection of what I'd play in a tech/house night - a mixture of grooves, funk, jazz, phat beats, and probably needs more cowbell.

Most important thing to do as a DJ?
Make sure you turn up.

Some of your first influences?
Laurent Garnier, Derrick May, Oliver Lieb, Jon Carter, Carl Cox, and all the Zouk residents during the late 90s.

Favourite Record?
Choice - Acid Eiffel. It's one of the most memorable tracks I've ever heard. it's full of emotion and bang. I remember hearing Laurent Garnier drop this in the morning and it simply brought me to tears.

What influenced your decision to join Zouk?
They have the best sound system, the best operations team, and their air conditioning works.

Best thing about your job? And the worst?
Best thing: I can drink on the job.
Worst thing: Gangnam Style.

Any music peeps you respect and admire?
I admire all my fellow residents at Zouk for what they have achieved and their huge expertise in their individual fields of music. Also I admire Carl Cox a lot for how he has adapted to the changing music trends over the past few decades, and yet stayed very much Carl Cox.

What's next for Adrian Wee?
A long vacation that involves a lot of pina coladas.

What can we expect from you for the Midnight Shift label showcase?
I'd like to think that my set will groove the crowd to get them ready for a banging set by Deetron.
